The Irish and Chin brands, all have agreed are very successful and eventful events. Reeewind  And Come Again 2013 the 5th edition was no exception; with this 80’s impact no one could or would deny the duo their spotlight at the top. Throughout the Caribbean, and in Reggae promotion of rub-a-dub sound systems right now, this duo is amongst the cream of the crop—the La krem. The fact that the two Mentor’s have now cornered the NYS Caribbean Reggae Sound Systems Market, is very telling. After all, this is what they have been doing worldwide for many years.

The Miss, or dis of the show came into play when fans realized that the most anticipate performer Joseph Winston Sterling aka Josey Wales, was not in the building– a no show and a let down to some. Others revealed that they did not care, because they got to see who they came to see. But thereafter, the debate  began. Not to mentioned that people felt that the sound systems sounded like one system playing.

Intense the debates, but there were no clear cut answers to the problems. Caribbean concerts and showcase goer believe that this exact situation has happened or happening far too often in our communities; where some promoters use artist names as pawn to draw big crowds, and patrons are left hanging. Thus, sometimes the immediate outcry is fraud and they want the practices stop. And sound systems are sounding too much alike. The cry is variety—is what people want.

So, conceding-ly  and to appease the Irish and Chin fan base putting them at ease, this Journalist seek and secured a straight answer from the Irish and Chin camp. The iterated answer was no, the duo and their company did not committee fraud with the artist Josey Wales.

According to Flair Lindsey, publicist for the Irish and Chin camp,  “Josey Wales did not get his traveling and license documents on time for the November 9, show.  We did not know up until Saturday, morning that he couldn’t come. We assumed that it could have happened but it turned out not to be. We worked on the Wales documents for over one year.”

“In hindsight the promoters feel that they should have waited for a definitive answer on  Josey Wales, before placing him on the show or should have put him on a future show.” Wales will be here, he got his documents, days after the  show– this week. From here on out we will only use one sound system,” Lindsey stated.

In addition, to what Flair has noted, other promoters have categorically states that—this situation accounts for some of the problems that they have encountered with flying in some artists/particular artist, from around the world to do shows here in the United States.

Reeewind 2013 was in fact a respectable and resounding show, people left feeling good about their money’s worth. It had the feel and air mark of a success by any standard deemed relevant. All the artist who performed: Johnny Osbourne-Brigadier Jerry, Muma Nancy, Charlie Chaplin General Trees, Michigan and Smiley, Luciano—all have never let down a fan yet, always giving us their best—to Yellowman who did what he could do to keep fans interested.

The bravado and uproar came with a pause, because some fans simply and specifically came to see Josey Wales, due in part because of his 10-year hiatus from the game (musically speaking). Irish and Chin continue to ride the waves, this was a small set back and they learned from it.

Irish/Chin, the tide has not drawn you both in yet, credence to you both.

TODAYS JAMAICA STATION AND LONG ISLAND RAILROAD HUB

JAMAICA STATION 100 YEAR

ANNIVERSARY

OUR VIEW

By: C. Harrison/Dec 4, 2013

The Jamaica station and the Long Island railroad celebrated its 100 year anniversary Wednesday, October 23, 2013. This MTA, hub is used by 150.000 commuters each day, according to an official immediate media release.  MTA officials celebrated the  historic rededication transfer point for 10 of the LIRR’s 11 branches. On hand for the festivities were MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast and MTA Long Island Rail Road President Helena E. Williams, as well as local officials and community leaders.

Oyster Bay High School kicked off the festivities by performing “Change at Jamaica,” a 10 minute instrumental piece by Pulitzer Prize Winner Composer Paul Moravec of Adelphi University.

The important role of the Jamaica Station, memorialized in railroad lexicon by the catch phrase “Change at Jamaica” has made commuting between Long Island and New York City possible for generations of Long Island Rail road customers. The station opened for business in 1913 as was part of newly elevated right-of way in Jamaica that did away with street level grade crossings for the first time.

Jamaica Station was designed by architect Kenneth M. Murchison and built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, then the parent company of the Long Island Rail Road. The entire Jamaica complex was constructed by  LIRR employees under the direction of railroad’s Chief Engineer John Savage. That same year, the LIRR moved into a new corporate office adjacent in the newly elevated station, platforms and tracks. The five-story brick building including the station waiting area, also designed by Murchison, was situated at the corner of Archer Avenue and Sutphin Boulevard, a dirt road intersection in an area still dotted with farms. In addition, Murchison designed the LIRR’s ticket office and waiting area on Sutphin Boulevard as the public entrance to the building, gliding it with an omate canopy that received special attention during the restoration. He placed the corporate entrance on Archer Avenue with “Long Island  R. R. Co.” in bronze letters across the top.

The land mark is amongst the best in the borough of Queens and the building is the oldest railroad in the U. S. still operating under its original name. Each week day the LIRR operates 732 trains with approximately  3000,000 customers traveling through Jamaica twice a day. AirTrain  JFK service draws an additional 11, 500 customers per day who arrive by train, subway, bus and taxi.

For much of the year, LIRR headquarters was veiled in scaffolding and steel grey safety netting as the LIRR Engineering Department employees and a privat contractor, Alps Mechanical Inc, labored on building elements that had seriously deteriorated over the years. The restoration effort was carried out in an effort to be consistent with the historic character of the building under the direction of the LIRR’s Department of program management.

Moreover, the release stated that in coming years, the MTA and LIRR are planning more than $300 million in infrastructure improvements as part of the first phase of the Jamaica Capacity improvement Project. Phase 1. encompasses design and construction in support of East Side Access, the new path to Manhattan that will bring LIRR customers to Grand Central Terminal and East Midtown for the first time. The work includes the construction of a new platform specifically dedicated to scoot service between Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn, the removal and installation of switches, realignment of track, reconfiguration of the Johnson Avenue Train Yard; construction of a freight train and modification to the existing signal system.

Both the Long Island Railroad and the Jamaica Station is a part of the recognized historic  featured stop on the Jamaica walking tour guide published by the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation.

MAN AND WOMAN ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Usain (Lighting) Bolt & Shellian Frazier

By: C. Harrison/Nov. 28, 2013

Jamaica W. I. has been known for its athleticism around the world. It has some of  the fastest and youngest athletic sprinters  in the world doing 6.7 to 10.0 meters flat and recently garnered one of the best track fields in the entire Caribbean region.

When it was announced recently over the radio, on the internet and on television that Jamaica was placed again in the history books, this time for having two of its top sprinters-Usain Lighting Bolt (a name I believe I was the first journalist to name him when he made history in Soul in my first article on him) and Shellian Frazier, becoming Athletics man and woman of the year, and that it was only the third time in history that  this had been done with the two athletes coming from the same county, Jamaicans were naturally ecstatically exhilarated yet humble at the same time. Jamaica followed Great Britain and the United States on the short list.

I surmised that the world  should keep Jamaican Athletes on their historic watch for these kinds of phenomenon, because they are going to continue to be a Enigma or (beacon) in our world.

Congratulations to both athletes.

THE AREA AROUND YORK COLLEGE SLATED

FOR BIG CHANGES/NEW TAX FREE ZONE

Posted By: C. Harrison/Nov 28, 2013

Today Albany spoke, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, designated the area around York College a tax free zone, as part of the start-up NY (formerly named tax free NY), program, which will bring new businesses and much needed jobs to Southeast Queens.

The initiative aims to bring revenue to communities in need by proving unprecedented exemptions from all taxes-sales, property, state corporate taxes for ten years as well as exemptions from state personal income taxes for employees in newly created jobs and includes designated communities around Cuny and Suny campuses. York College officials were notified of the decision on Monday.

Senator Malcolm Smith (D-Hollis) has backed the move from the beginning and has worked diligently to facilitate the measure, engaging in talks with the Governor’s office, his legislative colleagues and Dr. Marcia V. Keizs, President of York College. Smith, believes a tax-free zone is a wonderful opportunity for York College, which nestled in the heart of downtown Jamaica in Southeast Queens. “This is a creative initiative and in tough economic time, we should be doing everything we can to foster a climate for job creation, thereby assisting resident and students with post graduation work opportunities,” said Smith.

Under the program, businesses will partner with the higher education institutions in the Cuny/Suny systems as well as other universities and be able to access industry experts and advanced research laboratories. There will be one zone per borough and interested schools must apply for the designation and meet certain criteria. For example, in order to qualify the Cuny college must be in a community with the highest poverty rate compared to other colleges in the borough. The York College community has a 20.7% poverty rate.

Governor Cuomo said, “In a tax free environment, no one can match what New York has to offer. Businesses that are looking to startup or expand, and most importantly create jobs, should look no further.

In addition, new businesses and expanding businesses must align with or further the academic mission of the sponsoring college in order to be eligible to resided in the area. Those businesses should have positive community economic effects. Certain types of businesses are prohibited from participating–including retail, real estate and professional service type businesses.

Businesses can visit www.startup-ny.com to learn more about the program, find answers to frequently asked questions and search for eligible space.

THE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT—BETTER THAN EVER

THE PRESIDENT’S FUMBLE BECAME A BLESSING

FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

!We have to believe that nothing worth having is quick or easy. And we all know that it takes time for implementation of a policy or piece of legislature that has to get the Government’s blessing via stamp of approval for our populas—it usually bring with it an affect (hiccups) for further fixing; and we also know that some members of Congress will bark at it, if its the other side who comes out the victor–in this case the President’s Affordable Health Care Act.!

By: C. Harrison/November 25, 2013

mp

For some of us it was not a surprise when the President came out and stated “We fumbled,” we expected it. Everyone knows that any thing this big, will need some changes to allow refinement. I must admit that I am an optimist some of the times and a pessimist some of the times. I say this, because I believe and get the entire argument and implementation of what the President said about the Affordable Health Care Act. This, at a time when most publications were reporting that President Barack Obama admitted, that he misled the public. Yes, the President did tell us that most of us could keep our health insurance plan if we like them—but now that the Affordable Health Care Act, is in place, some people’s health plans are essentially being cancelled by there insurer because their insurance policies doesn’t meet the minimum coverage requires by the President’s new health care law.  The cancellations are also happening  because some States Insurance Commissioners are making decisions as to which health plans, can be sold in their states. We also know that  some GOPs States Governors will not obey the new laws. They flat out refuse to even acknowledge the newly mandated health  law.

The questions people who are complaining should be asking themselves is this, why would I want to keep a junk health care policy anyway, which is not benefitting me.  Why wouldn’t you want to seek a coverage that is good for your health, your pocket book—is now rock solid and back by the Federal Government in tow. Where, now health insurers cannot just push you around no more or cast you aside and say no to you, no matter what.  Now,  insurance companies will have to comply by the new law, rules and regulations guarantee to you by your President.

The President have stated “We fumbled, I am the head of this team and I am going to get it fix.” “I feel responsible for making it harder for them instead of making it easy for them.  I understand and feel for those people who have loss health plans. We should have done a better job getting it done right on day 1. We put a grandfather claws in the law but it was not enough. It is only 5% that have loss their plans. They will fine better cost and lower cost at better rates.”

Here is what I know, people always say that they like their health Care Plan, until they get sick and have to go to a doctor or enter a hospital—-then and only then, their mind will change when they are told that they can’t get covered for what their sickness is.  People should also realize that this health Care Act, is still in its infancy stage and that it is still early enough to make some changes to allow guarantees for us. The President didn’t lie, he make a good faith effort but the law needed some fine tuning and in short was over looked but, now he will fix it. Everything he said still stand and will go along with any change made.

You see, the insurance companies don’t want any changes in the law, this is so that they can continue to charge you for higher health insurance rates. Those people who have loss their Plans, should blame their health Care providers who are sticking it to them royally—because they don’t like Obama Care and furthermore don’t want to follow any rules bothering them. Incidentally, we can now say hurray because the website is now fixed and that was the reason for the President’s personal rating being shot down slightly, for the first time since he took office and which might change back this week of Nov 25. So, you see the fumble became a blessing. The Affordable Health Care Act is marching forward.

Moreover, one could also argue that given the viciousness of what the Junta’s (The GOP and Tea Party members) are saying and literally doing, is to me certainly more than just politics. We could divulge the point that given the fact that the President came to the table with an impeccable décor, leadership skills, won a Noble Piece Prize—-might be the reason for this volatile hostility toward him and if, we look pellucidly at the entire situation regarding the President, then we will see that this is blatant superiority complex by the Republicans being played out in front of the American people. simply because the President is a Black man. The belief is that “no black person should get or have the rights to be so smart via-this powerful.”  These words were said to Malcom X.  But you see in God we trust and I pray that we as a nation are pass this, really,  its sad.

WE MUST NEVER FORGET

Avonte Oquendo

The Search Is Off But No One Is Giving Up

Avonte Oquendo, fanished from his school, the Learning Center Boulevard School in Long Island City, Queens; Friday, October 4, 2013–at or around 12:30 PM. It was also the last time anyone had seen him alive and in person on surveillance video. He was seen by the school’s security guard leaving the building. She asked him where he was going but he never answered. He doesn’t speak verbally and is autistic. The boy is 14-years old.

It is now going on in its 7th  week and still there is no sign of him, to the disappointment of all—including his parents, family and the police department—whom have all search tirelessly.  Thus far, no one I believe has given up hope.

In the limitation of time and the  cold weather setting in, we are basically out of time to find him. I believe someone, somewhere has found him and knows exactly who he is.

My gripe is with the security guard who first saw him leaving the school—–because they’re the first line of defense or gate keepers so to speak. In a case like this, in any school like this particular school with children who have disabilities and attend schools like this one, have parents who depends on the security of the school to keep their child safe.

So, I am asking,  how much does the security guards know about these children at this Learning Center School?  and if security guards knew of these children’s condition (They should have been brief) -why wasn’t this guard more alert and a where, especially because he didn’t answer her——even more so, question the fact or look to see if the child made it back to class? It was reported that she (the guard) actually reported Avonte, missing hours later when it was too late.

Security guards are the eyes and ears of the schools they oversee and something such has this shouldn’t have happen on their watch. Someone in that neighborhood knows what happened to this child.

If you know anything or saw something contact the NYPD.
