Thee Impresario Celebrates His 19 Year Anniversary

  TONY COBB

The Maven

By: C. Harrison/Dec 30, 2014/8:34pm-update 1/25/2015

He, is acosmopolitan who almost always get what he wants and the job done; where ever and whatever it is, that he’s working on.   For those who are lucky enough to know him, can claim that he can be reputed, while others may say that he has no reproof. This Journalist can say,  while Tony Cobb, (The cat behind the glasses), has conspicuous characteristics about him, he has remained  steadfast a good friend. Cobb, to his listeners remains an hallmark.

Recently, Cobb, who is 93.5  WVIP’s most eloquent radio host celebrated his Nineteen Year Anniversary, via the Wimbly Night  Club, inside of the Bronx;  where he was bestowed upon by a parade of friends, notables and well wishers, including: City Councilman Andy King, Ed Robinson-Producer/Singer, Keeling Beckford-Singer, Dance Master-dancer-singer-radio host, Steven Souza-singer, Mesha Consious-singer, Street Hype’s Editor Patrick Maitland and a core of media on lookers. The extravagant affair was not only well attended but turned out blatantly successful.

Before the elicited event, this Journalist had the chance once again to have a conversation with Mr. Cobb. My last bout with this jaunty suave, was 2002, when I did my first article on him, which was published in the Gleaner Extra Newspaper. I interviewed him this time around because it was almost 20-years since I wrote him up .

According to this precise Cat, he is celebrating his 19-year, anniversary because he feels that he had a good achievement. He explained that his show was going very well and that while he had not done anything differently for his show, he did extend his gospel segment a bit longer. “I have a lot of church brothers and sisters who listens to me. I get calls from Canada, the Caribbean, London, the Cayman Island, and as far away as Africa, and around the New York tri-states area,” Cobb divulged .  He conceded that his show is very informative.

Conversely, when asked about his listenership, Cobb explained it this way,  “The last time I heard about my listenership, it was close to two and a half million listeners and at the times that I come on air in the mornings, I am the only one on www.wvipfm.com. I get half of that percentage of the two million. The internet drives up the listenership and I play a lot of R&Bs and Reggae,” he stated. In addition, Cobb,  articulated that he was doing the best that he can for his listeners and voiced that he is  very simple and easy going. The ‘Cat Behind the Glasses,’ said that people must decide on his show. “I am a modest person and I don’t have any egoism about me,” he quipped.

Cobb, a master at his profession, spearheaded and promoted some of the biggest names in R&B and Reggae, inside the music arena. Cobb helped to shape what we know today as the Music Industry. And being one of music’s premier principals, he has helped: Promoters, Producers, Business personals, Singers, Actors, and countless notables. Cobb’s promotional array of musicians included: Steve Wonder, The Jackson 5, Beres Hammond, Ken Booth, John Holt, Toots and the Mapals,  Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Bob Marley, Freddie Jackson, Alton Hellis, Freddie MaGregore, Marcia Griffins, the Slylite,  the Stylestics, Percy Slesge, Benny King, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Cuba Goodins and the Main Ingredients, Hopeton Lewis, Dennis Headards, and Stranger Cold…among so many many others.

“Tony Cobb, is a fair man,” stated Chris Chin of VP Record. Chin recalls that it was Cobb, who taught him how to promote in 1978, while they were at the Sheraton Hotel, in Jamaica, where Cobb was working with his Father.

Moreover , Cobb made a calculating note that Carlos Malcolm, was a great man who created and played the Afro Jamaican Rhythm and deserved recognition.

In finishing, the elegant dresser,  said that if people want to hear good music, classic music and love music, he is what they want.

I must add that if you have a chance to listen to him, you will hear that he dishes it up to the ladies.  We are please Tony.

RESILENCE

KEELING BECKFORD THE REBIRTH

By: C. Harrison/December 22, 2014/11:29am

scan0003_cropHe is revered to as a visionary,  quite possible one of the last monarch of a dinosaur of Reggae legends coming out of Jamaica West Indies.  In essence, he is a  Maven–Keeling Beckford is as resilient in his music has in his ways.  Some even see him as (Google), when it comes to the Reggae Music Industry.  Beckford is the 3rd child star to come out of Jamaica and the 4th person in America, whose visualization  helped to bring about the inception  of Hip-Hop to America’s urban markets via world phenomenon. Beckford is second to none, the history book.

Recently I had the chance and pleasure of  meeting this gigantic imperturbable musician. He was recommended to me by a well do perfectionist.  Clearly, I have seen and knew of him-heard his music but didn’t know exactly who he was until then.  Bite  my nails I did because I went home and literally saw him in pictures I have at  home, understandable immobile for a minute.  Since knowing him I learned that he maneuvers very well and has an impeccable perseverance.

Taken an hiatus away from the Music Industry for 10-years, Beckford took the time to set up and ran a Record Store called Keeling Records, in Brooklyn New York;  and to date, this was where he decided to launch his rebirth—thus making a brand new album call “Rebirth,” a powerful album with big big tunes with one of a kind modifications and hip-hop lyrics infused with reggae, never heard before. Beckford’s album is sure to reconnect and resonate with his fans when they hear it.  One could call it a album for women, You be the judge.

Moreover, when played DIs are going to have to rewind and come again, it is that good–all 20 tracks. The album can only be recognized as  Excellence.  Anything other description will not do. He started out at 13-years old, in the Reggae Industry blazing a trail in his wake and listening to his latest, one can say, he is still weaving that path–a legacy we will all Secom, to.

Masterful in his writing, polish and stylish in his singing, is the reason why Beckford is significant. You will never find another singer with his innovation of style and how he sing. One can imitate but there is only one Keeling Beckford.

I can tell you this, I am probably the only person to played it (The album)  first, outside of his studio and I have not stop dancing–I love that voice, it is as smooth as silk— money well spent. The album should dropped shortly.  You cannot remis dis.

To hear the rest of my interview with Keeling Beckford, you will have to see my TV show:  ®©Inside Queens With C. Harrison  on QPTV The Queens cable vision networks-in a few weeks.

MERRICK BOULEVARD’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS

COMMUNITY SERVICE

POSTED By: C Harrison/November 28, 2014/8:13PM

OFFICE OF STATE SENATOR MALCOLM SMITH

On Monday, December 22, 2014, The Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake and The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York family will host “Christmas on Merrick.”  From 10:00 am to 3:00pm on the 22nd, Merrick Boulevard, between 110th Avenue and 111th Avenue; will be closed to traffic and “Christmas on Merrick,” will afford us an outreach opportunity to connect with our neighbors this holiday season. We hope you will join Reverend Flake and Southeast Queens community at  “Christmas on Merrick.”

In December 2007, The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York in collaboration with the National Basketball Players Association and Feed the Children Program hosted “Miracle on Merrick Boulevard,” which feed over 10,000 people during the holiday season. It was one of the largest food give-away events ever hosted in New York City. It also served as part of an ongoing effort to alleviate hunger during the holidays, and raise pubic awareness of the 1. 4 million New Yorkers who go hungry every day.

With this year’s “Christmas on Merrick,” we will continue that effort and distribute toys, clothes, food and personal care items to underserved families who struggle to afford basic necessities. We have once again partnered with Feed the Children Program, and have commitments from City Harvest, Toys R’ Us, Men’s Wearhouse, Starbucks, and NCAA. We also anticipate commitments from WBLS/WLIB, Emblem Health, in addition to other certified Health Professionals, who will be on-site to provide a variety of health screenings and health care registration for families that are currently without care.

Please consider joining us in this momentous outreach commission by being a sponsor of “Christmas on Merrick.”

A contribution of your time, donations and support are needed. Please share this information with shelters and centers in your district that may benefit from this event. This humanitarian effort provides us all with an amazing opportunity to display compassion towards our neighbors during a time of charitable giving, remembrance and sacrifice.

It is our hope that you will consider joining us as a sponsor and help us bring joy to families this holiday season.

For further information and your availability please contact Pat Rubens at (516) 238-3639.

SUPERB! “I RISE”

ETANA ROSE

ALL THE WAY TO BILLBOARD’S #1 SPOT

Imagine! women artist in the Reggae Music Industry, had to wait 17-long years, to get back to the number #1 spot on Billboard. Etana did it for Reggae female artists, and it made us see that Cultural Reggae Music, is still alive and kicking; even though some people thought that good reggae music was dead; Ludicrous.

Monday, November 17, 2014, SOBs Night Club, in Manhattan hosted what I believe was the rebirth…of real Cultural Reggae Music and the core of what Reggae means. This is not to say, that there are not other good Cultural Reggae Music out there but right now this album is the best. And this is not ignoring the fact that the album has a couple of re-do’s, which were done over immaculately and masterfully by Etana. Thanks to the Irish and Chin Production Team and the VP Records Family, this has been in my book, a few years since Queen Ifrica; that we have gotten this type quality in reggae music coming out of Jamaica, as far as Women Reggae artist.

20141117_234010_crop                                                         Duane Stephenson & C. Harrison

Etana’s entire album (CD), was well put together. The creativity and lyrical contents gives off pure vibes, up-lift-ment for  the youths and this generation to rap themselves around. Joy is what I felt and the hope that in this decade, more reggae artist will try to match-up with the same or similar music.

Coming to the stage first was Duane Stephenson, who came to tease us with his kind of caroming fire and blessings. His first tease was “Rasta for High and High,” then “Real Ghetto Pressure,” cooling down with “Honey Its You That I Love,” and blazing fire  with “Jah Rain Over Man.”  These of course were meant to quench our thrust. Yes, his lyrical medleys coerces us to prepare for the main course.  Stephenson’s performance was excellence, no short falls. His latest album is a must have.

Remising! The very first time that I heard Etana sing, was in the 2000 era…..on that very same stage at SOBs. It was her first time in the U.S., as a musician and her first debut to the New York music arena. I remember the host Michelle Thompson’s statement after Etana, was done singing to an uproar of applaud…..”Watch out for this young women, she will be someone to be reckoned with musically and she is not going away,” Ms. Thompson said. I remember pellucidly, because producer/singer Ed Robinson was sitting next to me and we all agreed in union. Ms. Thompson was right, we all felt it and knew it was because of that voice, Etana’s voice.  This classy young women, has one of the most distinguish voices’ you will ever hear… a signature voice like a Whitney, Maria, or even Kayren White. You can’t dismiss it or mistaken it.  This songbird rose against all odds and yes she Etana nailed it. Powerful, Powerful CD….Etana, we Rose with you, your vibes are rejuvenating.

I can tell you this, Jamaicans, Blacks and women all around the globe, will pick this cd up for Christmas; no joke. Remember back in the day when people bought up Judy Monett, Marcia Griffin, and Sister Carol’s and more recently, Ifrica album…..well, here comes Etana, packing her punches. All you have to remember is this song, “I am not Your  Superwoman,” women jumped through hoops to get their hands on it after it was released and this album “I Rise,” will get the same treatment. I can’t rave enough about this album; when you hear a hit album or song you know it.  No, no I can’t pick a favorite all the songs on this album are good all 15 tracks, that good. When Etana sang her song on that stage, in SOBs it brought forth the beauty in her being. She shined like a star-light, born for the part she is bestow, leaving her mark and legacy in her path. Looking at her singing and seeing the comfort and eased on her face, I couldn’t help but think of heaven bells ringing like crazy. Yes. Etana is in her element and no one was or is going to take it away from her. “I Rise,” definitely is a monster hit for Etana. Billboard couldn’t have remis.

Conscious roots message… rub-a dub style, pack with lyrics CD, Etana rised to thee.. cream of the crop….she has the best cultural reggae music album in the market today-with notoriety. Nuff and big respects to Christopher Chin and Neil “Diamond” Edwards and to the editor and mastering of the album, Christopher Scott.. Great job.
