NYS NEW STAR REGISTRATION <\/strong><\/h1>\n

PROGRAM<\/strong><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to a new legislation by New York State, all homeowners receiving a Basic Star exemption are now required to register with the New York State Tax Department, in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.<\/p>\n

The legislation doesn’t require homeowners to register in 2013 to receive their Star exemption.<\/p>\n

Homeowners will not have to re-register every year.\u00a0\u00a0Based on the information provided in the registration process, the\u00a0 Tax Department will monitor homeowners eligibility in future years.<\/p>\n

YOU WILL NEED TO: <\/span><\/h3>\n

Provide a star code—but the state is mailing codes to all Basic Star recipients; or you can use the star code lookup<\/p>\n

Provide the names and social security numbers for all owners of property and spouses.<\/p>\n

Confirm that the property is the primary residence of one of its owners\u00a0–married couples with multiple residences may only claim one Star exemption.<\/p>\n

Confirm that the combined income of the owners and their spouses who reside at the property does not exceed $500.000.<\/p>\n

Confirm that no resident owner received a residency-based tax benefit from another state.<\/p>\n

Senior Citizens:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Senior citizens receiving Enhance Star Benefits, are not affected by the new registration requirement, which applies to Basic Star benefits only.<\/p>\n

Seniors must, however, take steps to ensure that they continue receiving Enhanced Star.<\/p>\n

Seniors receiving Enhanced Star who reside outside of New York City must continue to: apply annually or participate in the Income Verification program.<\/p>\n

Seniors receiving Enhanced Star who reside in New York City will be contacted by the New York City Department of Finance when they need to review.<\/p>\n

Registration Period:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Registration started on August 19, 2013 and will continue through December 31, 2013.<\/p>\n
